First Day of Spring.

There are all different reasons to celebrate the special days that changed your life - the day someone was born, the day you met someone important, the day you married the love of your life, the day you gave birth, the day you got clean/sober. What's so amazing is usually we don't fully know how much or in what ways our lives are about to be impacted. There is no way to know how significant or incredible these 24 hours will be for days, weeks, and years to come. It starts out just like every other day.

Fourteen years ago I started dating the guy of my dreams.

I remember the day we met - or at least the day that got the ball rolling. He was wearing his yellow Old Navy sweatshirt and was riding his bike around the parking lot of Brookside Baptist. I was on my way to the soccer field for practice. I plucked up the courage and without thinking said "hey" to him and halfway expected him to say nothing. Instead he said "hey" right back to me.

I remember when I first fell in love with him - at the ripe age 13. We were on a ski trip with a bunch of kids from Brookside Baptist and we rode to and from Gatlinburg and Memphis together in the same van. We were with a bunch of our mutual friends and it was a safe space where we could just have fun and be ourselves. I got to know him a little better over the long Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in 2001 and on the way back home from the trip I was head over heels for this sweet, quiet, kind, funny, playful older guy.

I remember our first kiss. It was an accident! We were leaning in to hug each other and our heads turned the same way and our faces ended up meeting and it was so incredibly awkward considering how well we'd known each other and how much we liked each other at this point. I remember going back inside and detailing the kiss to my big sister and then dissecting it with her. And to this day I love that moment - how hilarious it is to relive and think about - and how grateful I am that our awkward first kiss happened.

I remember the day he asked me to be his girlfriend. And I remember the day I said yes. Tony had asked me to be his girlfriend before and instead of saying yes - I told him I needed more time. To be completely honest, the gravity of our relationship was too much for me at the time. It felt like the real deal from day one between us and that was intimidating. Not to mention the foundation of our relationship was sturdily built on our friendship. What if we dated and for some reason it didn't work out... I would lose my best friend. That was a risk that at the time I wasn't willing to take. My cousin came in town to visit and she told me what an idiot I was for not being his girlfriend - that he was such a nice guy and he was clearly crazy about me. I don't remember what exactly changed between us to get me to say yes, but I remember Breanne being so honest and real with me and that was a huge wake-up call to me. I remember telling him I was ready and to ask me again. He told me this was the last time asking... that he wouldn't do it again. So March 20, 2003 after asking three times and it being WAY overdue... we made it official.

I love that it coincided with the first day of Spring when it is all about growth, newness, transformation, and renewal. I'm glad Tony never gave up on me when it would have been much easier to do so. I cherish every year I've had with him and everything we've shared.

We've come a LONG way since the Brookside days... and he's still my best guy and truest friend and without a doubt the great love of my life. And the best is yet to come!

Five on Friday! {LINK UP!}

Linking up with Christina at Carolina Charm for her Five on Friday for the first time!

ONE:

Catching Fire is finally out on DVD!  Already picked up my copy from Redbox and can't wait to watch it!!!  Normally I would wait until I had a free rental code - but this just couldn't wait.  Any other Hunger Games fanatics out there?!

TWO:

Why is it that doctor's offices are among the most healing of places coupled with the most frustrating depending on the day/person/moment/mood/ego...?  ARGH.  For those who didn't read about my issue via Facebook - here is a quick summation of what is going on:

me: "Could you explain why my medical records have not been faxed from your office yet considering I faxed my release form first thing Monday morning?"
"We only fax medical records on Fridays."
me: "Well, it's still Friday!"
"Your doctors nurse isn't in today so she will get to it Monday and they will fax it next Friday. Okay?"
me: "But, it's still Friday. Are my files in the office right now?"
"...yes..."
me: "Are my doctor and her nurse the only two people with access to my files?"
"Umm......... yes."
me: "Really? Because I've been in on other days and seen another doctor and they were able to access my files every time."
"I'm just not sure... but the nurse will be able to explain it all to you Monday."
me: "That's just not good enough for me.  While I was a patient I always got top notch care and excellent service - and now that I am no longer a patient the ball is being dropped for me. Do you see why this is frustrating? Waiting until next week is not acceptable."
"Can you hold just one moment?"
me: "Absolutely."
new person gets on the phone - "Hi! I'm going to get going on these files and fax them over this afternoon... they actually might have already faxed them..."
me: "They haven't. I literally just got off the phone with my new OB office who has faxed my release form twice this week and it's gone through both times with no response. They asked me to contact you to see what the hold-up is."
"Okay..."

This is how our conversation went today when I called around 1pm this afternoon.  I spoke to my former OBGYN's office both Monday and Tuesday in addition to today.  The only difference between the beginning of the week and today?  I refused to be pushed aside.  After the strenuous 10 minute phone call this afternoon, it took approximately 40 minutes for them to pull my files, walk upstairs, fax them, and leave me a voicemail stating it had been done.  As I said before - moral of the story?  Do not EVER give up or settle... especially if it doesn't feel right and ESPECIALLY if it has to do with yourself!!!  The best advice I've ever gotten from Oprah was DON'T BE AFRAID TO BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE!  It never took blowing up, raising my voice, cursing, or losing my temper, either.  It took calm and rational thoughts and speaking.  It took asking questions.  It took courage, patience, and manners.  It also took being firm and not accepting the unacceptable.  This lesson doesn't just go towards healthcare... it's a lesson that applies to so many facets of our daily lives.  Especially as a woman.

THREE:

I'm catching up on Grey's Anatomy... again/finally!  I am SO HAPPY they have seemingly pushed through the awkward start to this season.  I almost gave up on the show after being a fan since day one because it was just THAT bad this year!!!  I'm loving where they have taken so many of the relationships and just cannot imagine the show without Cristina Yang.  I remember feeling this way when Burke left.  When Denny died.  When George died.  When Izzie left.  When Henry died.  When Little Grey died.  When McSteamy died.... ETC!  So I just hope they write her off better than they did Izzie - that was just pathetic and her character certainly deserves more.  Man.  Has it been a crazy ten seasons or what?!  But really, it's gonna be so weird without her on the show.  Oh, and the news of Isaiah Washington coming back for her big send off?  Hmmmm.... what do you think about that?

FOUR:

McAlister's Deli is my favorite place right now.  It's kinda always been, but now it's for much different reasons than before.  I don't know if it's the same where you live, but on Tuesday evenings & all day Saturday kids eat free!  Plus, on all the other days, their kids meals are only $2.49!  That is awesome!  And they serve some really great options - Presley's two favorites are their turkey + cheese or grilled cheese sandwiches.  And for adults they have punch cards for meals (10th one is free) and even tea punch cards (5th one is free).  Just saying.  If you have to go out to eat every once in a while you might as well go somewhere with perks!

FIVE:

This weather is crazy.  What kind of crazy is it where you live?  Right now in Memphis it is 60 degrees after being in the 20-30's all week with a weekend outlook reaching into the 70s!  The rollercoaster part is what gets me.  Also, what's your favorite weather app??  I love Haze for iPhone.  (I believe it normally costs money to download it, though.  I got a free download through Starbucks a while back.)  But Haze is limited on the information it offers so of course I'd always be open to a new weather app!

And that's all folks!  What's your Five for Friday look like?  Link up through Christina's blog!

The prompts this week are {feeling, imagining, considering, listening to, and moving}

Feeling... Spring cleaning creeping up into my bones!  It's a good feeling.  The past few weeks I've just looked around and thought just how much stuff we have lying around here that we don't use or even notice anymore.  Hopefully I can get rid of some serious baggage around here and then do some deep cleaning!

Imagining... What it would be like to live like a bunch of hippies like in the movie Wanderlust.  Tony and I just got done watching it and while it's mostly just a funny movie - it does get you thinking about the lifestyle we live and whether or not we're actually happy or just chasing our tails.  Definitely a good and funny movie depending on what you like.

Considering... A few books for my next read.  I just finished The Vow and it was fantastic.  Next up is going to be one of the following:  Beautiful Creatures, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, or Rum Punch... it all depends on which one comes into the library first!  Any input?

Listening to... Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience" over and over.  I can't tell you my favorite song yet because honestly, they all just flow together so well and I get swept into the music without thinking much about individual tracks.  Cannot wait for part 2 of this album later this year!  So proud of being growing up in the same town as someone so talented and creative as this man.... I imagine I will be a lifelong fan of his!  Most currently listening to "Don't Hold the Wall"...

Moving... To the beat of my own drum {always}.  Thankfully, Presley doesn't know anything about judgement or criticism and she's the person I'm around all day... so when I do something silly instead of rolling her eyes or being embarrassed, she just shoots me a huge smile and shares in a belly laugh or two with me.  Best feeling ever is dancing all crazy to Disney music with either her in my arms or her watching me move all over the place & knowing she's having just as much fun as I am!
This baby girl is easily becoming the best friend I've got and ever had

Nice Weather Bucket List

Looks like it's almost time to celebrate one of my favorite Midwest holidays...SPRING-TIME IS UPON US!  Yes... March 20th is this upcoming week already.

One swallow does not make a spring.
Bluebirds are a sign of spring; warm weather and gentle south breezes they bring.
In spring, no one thinks of the snow that fell last year.
Don’t say that spring has come until you can put your foot on nine daisies.
Spring-time sweet!
The whole Earth smiles, thy coming to greet.
Spring Folklore

And not only is March 20th the first day of spring, it is also our dating anniversary... ten years ago Tony and I decided to make it official, boyfriend-and-girlfriend style.  Anyways, back to spring!  Other than looking for bluebirds and daisies to step on, this is what you can find us doing once the weather cheers up:

Some things are silly (trying the cool ranch doritio taco from Taco Bell) and others are things we've been wanting to do for a long time and just haven't gotten around to yet (like riding the channel cat or going inside the John Deere Commons).  We figure we won't be living in the Quad Cities forever and we want to live it up while we are here!  And of course, other things will just be exciting firsts for Miss Presley.  She has yet to get on a swing and I just can't wait to see how she likes it.  She hasn't been to a baseball game, ever seen fireworks, or ridden in her bike seat - and I am terrified when I think about that last one.  Also, we got an AWESOME fondue set when we got married and we have yet to use it.  I know, what in the world am I doing with my life?!  I think I take a peek at it every week and let out a long sigh!  It's absolutely time to light that baby up.  Or in our case plug it in... it's electric!  I think I'm most excited about the Quad City Marathon 5 Person Relay!!!  We did the QC Marathon 5k last year and it was such a fun time - especially all the fun stuff they have going on downtown Moline after the race.  Cannot.  Wait.  We're hoping to do a family relay team which will make it even more awesome.  Especially if my cousin Breanne signs up with us... then we will have someone who can totally kick ass at the longer legs of the race!  ;)  Of course, I say this all now before I begin the actual running!  I remember when we did the C25K last year I kept telling Tony that not all bodies were made to run.  Hopefully I can change that theory this summer.

Alright... so what's going on this Spring and Summer in your town?
