Baby 3.0: BOY or GIRL?

Tomorrow is the BIG appointment where we'll find out if this baby is a he or she. Gender isn't a huge factor to me, to be honest. I don't feel that either gender is more important than the other - both are beautiful and wonderful and deserve celebration. We don't have all pink things in this house because we currently have all girls. My girls love their Disney princesses full of magic, dresses, and singing but they're equally fascinated by all things Star Wars including light saber fights. They dig in the dirt and they aren't being raised to know the difference between "boy" and "girl" colors, clothes, or toys.

So in this regard, the outcome of tomorrow's ultrasound isn't hanging in the balance for us. I don't feel that our family would be incomplete if we are lucky enough to have a third girl. Will we miss out on certain experiences? Potentially, but not necessarily. I might not ever get a mother/son wedding dance. We might not experience what it's like to raise a son or have our family name carried on by another generation. But that wasn't our purpose for having a third kid.

It also doesn't mean we can't be excited at the prospect of having a boy. Because we absolutely are! But looking forward to the possibility of having a boy absolutely doesn't mean I'll be disappointed if I find out I'm carrying a girl. I am over-the-moon excited by each outcome!

There are so many wonderful things we look forward to no matter what the gender of this baby turns out to be! I'm so looking forward to holding my sweet baby and seeing his or her big sisters holding them as well. I love seeing Tony take care of a newborn. The love that grows from having a baby just strengthens the bond of our marriage and while it's not all sunshiny moments (spit up, poop outs, sleepless days and nights...) I know when Tony and I concur these mountains together in the early days it does something so wonderful for us. The thrill of going through it all again for the first time by experiencing what it's like to have a boy is both exciting and terrifying! While having our 3rd girl would bring back so many wonderful memories while still introducing this entirely new little life into our hearts and family.

So when people have asked me what I'm hoping to have this time around, I never quite know how to answer that. I don't want to sputter off the cliche of "as long as they're healthy" but geez, is that not so true? Most of the time I just say what I'm honestly feeling. Yes, I am hoping to have a boy on this particular day, but no it's not because I feel like my family only is of value as long as I produce a son for my husband. Tony says he'd love to see what a little boy of ours would look like - and of course so would I - but we both agree we'd be so anxious to see how the features of another girl of ours would manifest. I feel like it's totally normal to feel the joy and sadness in every experience. If we don't have a boy to carry on the Duggan name, will I be a little sad for that? Yes. Just like I was when that happened with my Myers generation (all girls from both my dad and my uncle). But feeling that amount of grief doesn't take away from the happiness that will inevitably come from having another baby girl. I love my family but do I yearn for weekends full of staying in bed with my husband all day? Absolutely. Denying the full extent of your feelings is the first step towards a bitter place that I don't want to be. So it's okay to be excited and scared and happy and sad all at the same time.

After bringing each kid home we vowed to ourselves and each other that we would stop putting one another through the hell of the newborn phase. Eventually though, we felt in our hearts that our family wasn't complete; that we had more love to give. We just weren't done yet. Sometimes I joke since we are hoping to purchase a van sooner than later that now we can keep having kids until the van is full! Other days I panic a little about Tony & me being outnumbered by children in a few months. And to make my mind an even more crazy place to be, it makes me a bit sad to think this is potentially our last baby.

Parenthood makes you even more irrational than you were before! But I would choose this life over and over again given the chance. And as long as the baby cooperates tomorrow, I can't WAIT to share with everyone what we are having!

It's a GIRL!

We found out today that we are expecting a baby girl in July!

Words can't even begin to describe how at peace I feel after seeing that out baby was alive and healthy today via ultrasound. We are so blessed with that technology! Though I didn't get to experience it next to my husband, my little sister got to be there with me today!!!! Amazing! I just feel so lucky.

And in case you don't believe me, here is the proof:

Now... To come up with a name for this little lady!!! We have ZERO girl names picked out. (And of course already chose our boys name!!!). Any suggestions? :)

No Looking Back!

It's February 11th today... that means exactly 9 days until my BABY turns two years old!  And after that, there is no looking back.  She will never be one again!  I am so excited for her being two and beyond... to watch her become a big sister... for her to master things like jumping and maybe start the earliest stages of swimming... to go from a crib to a toddler bed... to start having favorites and all those fun, crazy things that two year olds do.  (Notice: Not on my list of things I'm looking forward to is potty training.  The thought of it scares the hell out of me.  But, hopefully that will come too.)  Expect a supremely sappy birthday post sometime next week... assuming I can hold it in that long!

Presley's first time sliding by herself!

This happy girl sang her aunt Ashie a happy birthday! It was the sweetest.
This is a still from the video we sent Ashley.

Other news?  I think I have tentatively ruled out fixer-upper homes.  Ideally, it would be a fantastic idea, experience, and investment - but when you consider where we are currently ("homeless" with one baby and another on the way) I just don't think it's an option for us.  If it doesn't have EVERY thing we want and there are projects we'd like to do down the road -sure!- but we are going to focus on homes that already have the basics and that are move-in ready.  Coming to that conclusion has given me a great deal of peace in this process.  While there are still so many unknowns for us and plenty of decisions to make, I am happy to have one decision tentatively checked off.  Next up?  What part of the Midsouth are we going to live in?!  So many options!

We are looking in the Memphis area for a home - this includes so many areas... Bartlett, Cordova, Germantown, Midtown, Downtown, Collierville, Oakland, Lakeland, and then there are the cities just off the Tennessee border in Mississippi... Olive Branch, Southaven, etc!  Granted, we've narrowed it down beyond that initial list... I still feel like we have so many options and they are all so very different.  Different style homes, different taxes, different schools, different commutes.  There are strong pros and cons in each city we are looking in.  When we were still navigating the loan process I viewed these choices as more stressful than they were exciting but now that we are READY to buy - I am getting more and more excited with each new hopeful.

Tomorrow Presley and I, along with our fabulous realtor, are going to check out the second round of houses - this time in a totally separate area than the last.  We will hopefully be scouting out four just like we did the last time.  I plan to share some of my favorite things and additional observations about these homes, too.  I am trying so hard not to get my hopes up because anything could happen... but I really really really feel like one of these four houses could become our home.  My friend Lindsey said that when they were looking for homes they had a list of expectations for their home - both needs and wants - and the way that they picked "the one" was going by that list.  Well, these next houses seriously have so many of those things for us.  I look forward to writing a blog later in the week that includes what we are looking for in this home!

Other excitement for this week?  We're going to get Presley's BIRTHDAY pictures done today!  I gave her a bath before naptime this afternoon and guess what happened?  Right before Presley got out she slipped and smacked the entire side of her face.  When I put her down it was still red so I wonder if that will make the photos!  I'm so excited for the results of these pictures and can't wait for you guys to see her sweet outfit.

Another thing I am just busting at the seems about is going to see WICKED with my mother-in-law, Selena, tomorrow evening!!!!  I saw it in Chicago in 2005 with my Aunt Donna and I was absolutely blown away by it.  So much so that when I saw it was coming to Memphis I knew there was no way I wouldn't be going to it and I am beyond excited for Selena to see what it's all about.  I am also excited to see how it compares to the first time I saw it.

Here is Presley with her Papa Mike & Grandmommy Selena at lunch Sunday... this is after we looked at the four houses from the post earlier in the week! So very thankful for my in-laws support and input throughout this process.

Then, later this week, we will have to chance to visit my sister and future brother-in-law!  They live about 5 hours away so they are just close enough for a trip but just far enough to not do it regularly so this is special for us!!!  And next week?  Well, we just might be finding out if baby 2 is a HE or SHE!  And then there is Presley's birthday and birthday party!!!  It seems like there are so many exciting things going on right now and so many things bringing us joy and anticipation right now.  I've got to remember to pace myself and not get too worked up about everything because it's those moments that when things don't go the way I planned it can be pretty upsetting... so just have to stay positive!

Presley, Baby 2, & I last week visiting Selena at work!
I'm just about 18 weeks here.

Hope to be back later in the week with some positive news and that in the meantime you are having a spectacular week as well - I'd love to hear about it!!!  And for those of you who have sent me well wishes, advice, or just to let me know that we've been in your thoughts throughout the first time homebuying process - I appreciate you more than you may be aware.  None of it is unsolicited or unwanted in any way and I take your words of wisdom to heart.  Putting myself out there and giving you all specifics on our current situation is so that I can get your feedback - so I hope you know I TRULY appreciate every word of it.  So thank you friends and family... I love you guys so much and only hope to be a blessing in your life like you have been in mine!

Pros & Cons: Gender Reveal

When we were pregnant with Presley, there was absolutely no way that I wanted to wait to find out if I was having a boy or girl.  At our 20 week ultrasound our baby wasn't cooperating and we left without knowing what we were having.  That was EXTREMELY frustrating.  Our expectations going into the appointment were very high and very clear: we were going to find out the gender no matter what.  So when that didn't happen, we paid out of pocket to find out later in the week.  Although we only had to wait a few days... it was VERY SLOW & painful not knowing!  Of course, everything is different when you are experiencing it for the first time.  More intense.  There are so many unknown things you have yet to experience!  At least that's how I felt the first time around.

So, I will attempt to write out pros/cons of revealing my baby's gender before s/he is born.

Finding Out
Pros:
  • We will know what to expect.  For example, we have tons and tons of baby girl clothing that we could reuse is baby 2 is a girl.  If we find out we are having a boy during the pregnancy we will have more time to acquire boy clothing!
  • Also, we will be able to more realistically make decisions for the future of our baby depending on their gender.  (For example, circumcision.)  I know we will prepare ourselves whether we find out the gender or not, but it would just really cement it in my mind how important these decisions are for us.
  • The excitement we get to feel for the last half of the pregnancy once we know what we are having!  Not to mention, the extra chance to begin bonding with the baby even deeper.
  • When we finally found out with Presley that we were having a girl it was such a special moment!  Which would be an even more intense, special moment if we wait until his/her birth to find out... but that is such a special moment regardless of when you find out!
  • We can really begin to narrow down names!
Presley at our "gender reveal" appointment... only we didn't find that day!

Waiting
Pros:
  • Surprises are sorta magical!
  • Waiting for that amazing moment when the doctor gets to tell you after you've just birthed your baby... "It's a.... !"  And thus... this would be some major, kick-ass motivation during the toughest moments of labor.
  • Baby 2 might be our last baby (if it were up to Tony) so it would be nice to have a new experience with this pregnancy in waiting to find out.
  • No opportunity for misjudgment!  You hear of people who "100%" find out the gender of their baby, just to be shocked when it differs at birth!!!  This way, we are looking at baby in REAL time and there is no mistaking then!

I love Sarah's reason (and encouragement) for waiting so much and thought I would share it as well!

What it comes down to isn't really a HUGE amount of pros for either side... it just comes down to how strongly we feel about each pro!  I bolded the two pros I feel most strongly about.  After having PPD the first time around, a huge motivation in finding out beforehand is the extra chance to begin bonding with this babe early on.  (Not that I wouldn't be able to bond without knowing if it is a him or her... but it IS different when you know what to expect.)  But then there is the huge motivation to wait in knowing that would help me through the toughest moments in labor and delivery!

Time will tell what we decide... but I am dying to hear what you guys think: Would you find out what you were having if you had the opportunity?  Or would you wait?  And why??  Are there any pros that I've left off?

Today's the big day!

Our ultrasound appointment was today at 2:30 p.m. and we were both so ready to see our sweet little baby again!  We were most excited to find out the gender of our sweet baby but, of course, the baby decided to be stubborn and we still have no idea.  DEFINITELY upsetting -- but we got good news that our baby is very healthy and growing right on target!  We saw the baby's head, legs, feet, belly, the four chambers of the heart, ribs, spine... we saw everything EXCEPT the genitals, of course. ;)  The baby's heartbeat was 153 bpm today and weighs just at 10 ounces.  And, we have some beautiful new pictures that I'm excited to share once I get them transferred to the computer.

That's all I can muster up for now... I'm pretty bummed out right now even though I am so happy to have a healthy baby.  I just get myself so excited for these kinda things and then my bad luck rears it's ugly head and rains on the parade.  So, hopefully I'll edit this later when I'm done pouting so I can show off the pictures of my good looking child. :)

Edit @ 11:51p.m.- Here is some perspective from my Aunt: "Better to have a healthy baby than to know what you are having."  So true; thanks Aunt Jill for giving me something constructive and positive to focus on! :)  Love you!

19 weeks & 1 day

Not a whole lot to really say tonight, but wanted to post the pregnancy picture we took tonight.

19 weeks & 1 day
I have a hard time believing that I am just about halfway through my pregnancy.  It seems like just yesterday we were in Mexico for our family vacation and I was feeling nauseous at every smell, taste, or sensation I experienced. And in the blink of an eye, the next time I write I will hopefully be sharing whether we're having a baby boy or baby girl!  Any wagers?

I'm feeling very blessed today to be carrying this baby and just blessed all over.  And tired.  So goodnight and until next time, bloggies!!!!
